A History of Pop(ular) Music (206): Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970)

Een chronologische reis door de populaire muziek van de afgelopen honderd jaar. De Canadese Joni Mitchell kwam al eerder voorbij in deze lijst. Zij had echter zoveel invloed op andere singer-songwriters dat een tweede vermelding best kan. Haar teksten gingen vrijwel altijd ergens over.
Big Yellow Taxi is een vroege aanklacht tegen aantasting van de natuur door de mens. Hoe ze tot het schrijven van deze song kwam vertelt ze in een interview: "I wrote 'Big Yellow Taxi' on my first trip to Hawaii. I took a taxi to the hotel and when I woke up the next morning, I threw back the curtains and saw these beautiful green mountains in the distance. Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke my heart... this blight on paradise. That's when I sat down and wrote the song."
